99.1 KGGI's DJ Qui West joins San Manuel's Masters of the Mic
By Thomas LaRocca
99.1 KGGI drive-time DJ Qui West is known for playing the day's hottest hits and entertaining listeners.
He'll flip the script on Monday nights at the Tukut Lounge as contestants will sing the hottest hits and attempt to entertain him as he is one of a panel of judges for San Manuel Indian Bingo & Casino's inaugural Masters of the Masters of the Mic Karaoke Challenge.
"You’d be surprised who does karaoke, " the on-air personality said, "Because sometimes you get people who really can sing and they just maybe haven’t had their break or just had to do other things in life.
"I expect to see some talented singers."
Of course, the opposite is also true and there might be some – let’s say… performers that might not be selling out stadiums… yet.
"There’s going to be some really bad ones, but sometimes they’re so bad they’re good," he said. "If you could entertain us by being terribly bad - you might actually win the contest just being that entertaining. Just own it. If you’re going to be bad, be terrible at it, be the worst. So, I think it’s going to be entertaining regardless."
Remember William Hung? Owned it.
Qui West - whose real name is Chris Quiles - began his career in San Francisco and moved on to Houston, hosting the No. 1 rated show in Houston at legendary hip hop station KBXX 97.9, before finding a new home here in the IE at 99.1 KGGI in 2015. His favorite part about working as an on-air talent is the "listeners and realizing I get to be a part of their lives every day - we are nothing without the love and support of the listeners."
With over a decade of experience in the music business, he may know a thing or two about music.
But can he sing?
"I have [karaoke'd] before," he said. "I am not very good at it, but I do have a passion for it. Usher's 'Nice and Slow' is my go-to song."
Obviously a fan of classic Usher, West also enjoys Justin Timberlake and has a soft spot for anything 90s R&B - all of which are well represented in the song book of The Reel Band - whom will supply the tunes to which our competitors sing in this Live Band Karaoke challenge. Based out of Los Angeles, the 5-piece band is a high energy and entertaining musical group that is extremely versatile, performing the best of R&B, Hip Hop, Latin, Cumbia, Salsa, Old School Funk and much more.
Surely something for everyone who enters.
Contestants can register starting at 8:30pm at the Tukut Lounge with the first round of competition kicking off at 9pm, Round 2 at 10pm, Round 3 at 11pm and the championship round set for midnight. The winner of each round will advance to the finals with a shot at their share of $1,000 and the title of Master of the Mic.
"To win, you gotta put on a little show," Qui, who is one of the panel of three judges said. "It's one thing to just kinda match the lyrics to the song, but show me the passion behind it! Throw in some dance moves! Make us feel the music. Be passionate about what you’re doing. Be passionate about the music.
"You’re obviously doing it because you love the music."
Masters of the Mic kicks off this Monday, August 22 with a new contest every week.
